Fort Collins Coloradoan May 5, 2008 Legislation requiring uranium mine operators to prove they can return groundwater supplies to the existing conditions or to be in line with current state environmental standards, is heading to Gov. Bill Ritter. Senate amendments to HB 1161 were approved in the House today by 49-15. “We’re really excited about it,” said Fort Collins Democrat Rep. John Kefalas. The legislation, termed “the most important to Northern Colorado” by local lawmakers was watered down by hard rock mining interests to only apply to uranium mine operations in Colorado. If Ritter signs the bill into law, there will be an immediate impact on a proposed uranium mine northeast of Fort Collins in Nunn, Colo. Nearby residents have spent much of the legislative session in Denver lobbying for pas-sage of HB 1161.
