Responsible Uranium Mining Print

Many people in Boulder County are unaware of the attempts by Powertech Uranium Corp. to mine uranium in Weld County, near Fort Collins, Wellington, and Greeley. They intend to use a technique called "in-situ leaching", a mining method that has the potential to contaminate not only the the Laramie-Fox Hills aquifer, but could potentially contaminate the Denver basin aquifers as well. It is important to note that in other parts of the country, attempts to clean-up after in-situ leaching have failed.

Our lawmakers are working on a bipartisan effort to protect ground water from uranium mining pollution. Companies that propose to inject chemicals into groundwater must be held accountable for cleaning up after themselves. Colorado’s aquifers are too valuable to be treated as sacrifice zones. Many states ban uranium mining entirely. If Colorado is going to host yet another uranium mining boom, we need to ensure reasonable water quality and public health protections. Lawmakers are acting now, at the start of the boom – rather than scramble for taxpayer dollars after the pollution occurs. Please support our legislature in passing the following bills:

HB08-1161: Protects communities and water by promoting responsible uranium mining HB08-1165: Strengthen Mining Reclamation Standards
