Protect local communities Print

As a Northern Colorado resident who is opposed to the proposed uranium mine in Nunn, it is no surprise that the Colorado Mining Association is fighting against our local government over the authority to grant permits for mining operations. These international mining companies have historically left the local and regional water supplies toxic.

The only way to keep this industry accountable is to protect the right of local communities to reject those mining operations that threaten to harm local water supplies. Colorado's aquifers are too valuable to be treated as sacrifice zones.

If mining is permitted, uranium mining companies that propose to inject chemicals into groundwater must be held accountable for cleaning up after themselves. Many states ban uranium mining entirely. Lawmakers are right to act now, at the start of the boom - rather than scramble for taxpayer dollars after the pollution occurs. I urgeeveryone to e-mail state and local representatives to support this.
