Mining operation threatens our water |
|
|
by Randy King Boulder Daily Camera February 24, 2007 The recent issues with the Summitville Mine are a glimpse of our future, in Northern Colorado, if we don't stop Powertech (a Canadian company) from performing in-situ leach uranium mining in the Laramie Fox Hills Aquifer. How many times must we face such catastrophes before we realize we are our own worst enemies? Colorado is going to keep growing by an astounding rate, and water is going to be more precious than ever. Powertech claims it will not contaminate the aquifer. Yet in-situ leach uranium mining has never been done without doing so. If we don't rise up and stop it, we will have nobody to blame but ourselves. Colorado doesn't even gain any severance pay from the mining industry. We will be the losers. This is environmental terrorism. Randy King lives in Wellington, Colo.
