Play fair Powertech! Protect our lands and water from uranium Print E-mail

Here's a recent email (February 22, 2008) from Matt Garrington, Field Directior for Environment Colorado to a CARD member:

"Our opposition... have not been playing fairly."* That's what the Canadian company Powertech Uranium said about farmers and ranchers, conservationists, medical experts and local officials who voiced concerns about the impact of the proposed "Centennial" injection uranium mine northeast of Fort Collins in Weld County.
But who's playing fair and who isn't?
Powertech insists that the proposed uranium mine is safe. If that's the case, then why are they opposing a bill that would ensure sensible environmental protections and require uranium-mining companies to clean up after themselves and restore groundwater quality?
Uranium mining can have a huge impact on our wild lands, our water resources and our communities. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has said that injection uranium mining often contaminates groundwater, leaving behind toxic and radioactive pollution.
E-mail Powertech today and tell them to stop opposing sensible environmental and public health protections for uranium mining. Click this link or paste it into your browser to take action now: http://environmentcolorado.org/action/preservation/play-fair-powertech?id4=ES.
Colorado's one experiment with injection uranium mining in Weld County increased radioactive contamination to over 15 times the water aquifer's safe, pre-mining levels. With a new uranium boom on the horizon, we need to make sure we do things right.
E-mail Powertech today and ask them to drop their opposition to environmental protections on uranium mining: http://environmentcolorado.org/action/preservation/play-fair-powertech?id4=ES.

BACKGROUND ABOUT HOUSE BILL 1161

Protecting groundwater. Water is too precious a resource in Colorado to be exposed to irresponsible mining practices. We need to protect groundwater quality by setting reasonable standards that allow mining to take place but protect domestic and agricultural water resources. Uranium mining companies should demonstrate and prove that they can restore the affected aquifers to their pre-mining conditions before permits are issued.

Protecting our waterways, environment and public health. We need to close the loophole and ensure that all uranium mining is subject to environment and public health protections as "designated mining operations." These sensible protections were created in response to the Summitville mining disaster that killed 17 miles of the Alamosa River in 1993 and can help ensure that uranium mining happens more responsibly.
