Powertech opens Wellington office Print

WELLINGTON -- Developers of a proposed uranium-mining project near Nunn in western Weld County have opened an office in Wellington as the project's operations center.

Powertech Uranium Corp. plans to extract uranium from a mineral claim covering more than 5,700 acres between Wellington and Nunn near the junction of Weld County roads 19 and 100, a tract known as the Centennial Project. The company proposes to use a technique called in-situ mining, whereby a liquid solution is injected into underground deposits of uranium to dissolve the mineral, then extracted through production wells. The dissolved uranium is removed at the surface and the solution is re-injected into the subsurface rock to extract more uranium.

Battle lines have been drawn around the proposal, with an opposition group called Citizens Against Resource Destruction opposing the Powertech plan on the grounds that it may result in contamination of local groundwater and air quality.

In announcing the opening of the Wellington office, British Columbia-based Powertech also made official the appointment of the management team that will direct the permit application process over the next two years.

Terence Walsh has been named project manager and Michael Beshore will serve as senior environmental coordinator. Both are Fort Collins residents.

The Powertech statement said the establishment of the Wellington office, aside from its role as project headquarters, would "create a local presence in the project area with the objective of enhancing community relations."

The company also announced the move of its Colorado headquarters from Centennial to a larger office complex in Greenwood Village.
