Don't put toxic mine near cities Print

by Teresa Foster
Boulder Daily Camera
September 4, 2007

I want to alert the public to an article that appeared in the Aug. 23 issue of the Camera about a company wanting to dig a uranium mine in Nunn, Colo. It seems that this article didn't raise any red flags, however, I think we all should be alarmed about what is being proposed.

Powertech, based in Vancouver, B.C., has proposed a $20 million uranium mine near the farming and ranching community of Nunn about 70 miles north of Denver.

The question is, do we want a uranium mine in Weld County? We all know the truth about nuclear energy ... the promise of clean energy has turned out to be a environmental disaster waiting to happen.

Do we want mining of this incredibly toxic substance in our own back yard? Colorado may reap some financial benefit from the mine, but we need to look at what the real costs will be ‹ contamination of aquifers, and more. Even U.S. Rep. Marilyn Musgrave has taken action by contacting the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, voicing her concerns about the potential impact to groundwater supply in the area.

The people of Nunn need our help! Sign the petition on their Web site: www.nunnglow.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=83&Itemid=134

Then send your concerns to your local and state lawmakers.

Thank you for taking action.
