Ban uranium mining Print

by Jim Vassallo

The current controversy over the proposed uranium mine (by Powertech Inc.) has me wondering. Why would that corporation make such a dumb investment in such close proximity to a heavily populated area? Was it greed or arrogance? Lane Douglas, project manager for Powertech Inc., said, "Powertech is here to stay and is committed to being a good corporate citizen and neighbor." Sounds like arrogance to me, especially because (I believe) the majority of our regional population opposes this radioactive mining operation. Until she gets a call from the White House, even Rep. Marilyn Musgrave is against it.

I think this controversial proposal is a result of Vice President Dick Cheney's top secret energy plan. If Powertech sincerely wanted to be a good corporate citizen, it would construct a wind farm on those 5,000 plus acres.

Douglas said that the groundwater in the uranium ore zone is already contaminated. So why worry? I guess Douglas doesn't know water travels underground for hundreds of miles.

To oppose this abomination, write to Weld County Commissioners, P.O. Box 758, Greeley, CO 80632. They have the final say on granting permits. Uranium mining should be banned from Colorado.
