An open letter to Rep. Marostica on mining Print

by Alexis Hmielak (Letter to the Editor)

Dear Rep. Don Marostica:

In House testimony, regarding Colorado House Bill 1161, designed to hold mining companies accountable to restore groundwater to its previous condition, you accused Coloradoans Against Resource Destruction (CARD) of being "fake-sters" by falsely producing 8,000 petition signatures against uranium mining. That is not so. I personally signed a petition against uranium mining in Colorado, along with 8,000 other Coloradans, many of whom probably voted to elect you. I strongly resent your inference that I and others were misrepresented by CARD.

Your lack of comprehension that 8,000 Coloradans, and growing, could be against uranium mining and all its negative impacts is stunning. Your accusation that a group of concerned citizens would "fake" signatures to influence legislation is reprehensible. As an elected public official, you promised to protect the health and welfare of your constituents, not to protect the profits of foreign mining companies. Your lack of concern here should be a red flag to all Coloradans who you are not acting in their best interest.

I ask the people who have signed petitions for CARD over the last year to e-mail This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it or call (303) 866-2947, and tell him that you willfully signed a petition to stop uranium mining in Colorado.

I would hope that you receive at least 8,000 e-mails on this, and I would also hope you will then believe the hazard of uranium mining is a real and dangerous issue that concerns many Coloradans.
